DP World has appointed Mota-Engil, a leading global construction company, to spearhead the development of the Banana Port, a strategic project aimed at solidifying the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) position as a key trade hub.
This partnership marks a significant milestone in the realization of the Banana Port project, which is set to revolutionize the country’s trade landscape by introducing cutting-edge infrastructure, lowering business costs, and enhancing the DRC’s economic self-sufficiency.
The port will be developed in phases, with the first phase designed to accommodate the world’s largest vessels. It will feature a 600-meter quay, a handling capacity of 450,000 TEUs per year, and a 30-hectare storage area. The second phase will extend the quay wall by over 2 kilometers, further expanding capacity.
The project will engage multiple companies, including local enterprises, and is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, creating new opportunities for Congolese workers and businesses.
As the DRC’s first fully-equipped maritime gateway, the Banana Port will reduce transport costs, enhance trade efficiency, and support key local industries, from agriculture to manufacturing.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, emphasized the company’s commitment to constructing world-class infrastructure to the highest standards, driving economic growth, and fostering new opportunities for the Congolese people.
