About 90% of world trade is carried by the international shipping and marine industry. It would be impossible to carry out intercontinental trade, the transport of bulk materials and the import and export of affordable food and manufactured goods without shipping.

There are two broad categories of cargo and passenger ships in the marine and shipbuilding industry. Cargo ships are further classified into tanker vessels which include tankers, aircraft carriers, patrol boats, luxury liners, barges, FPSOs, icebreakers, tugs, large seagoing vessels for containers, and bulk carriers.
