Water underpins almost every manufacturing and production process in the world. In addition to water and energy being intrinsically linked, all processes producing energy (including electricity) use water in some way: extraction of raw materials, cooling, cleaning, growing biofuel crops, and generating electricity. In order to make water resources available to humans (including irrigation), pumping, transportation, treatment, and desalination all use energy. Water is essential and has been embedded in virtually everything created on earth, whether it is for power production, sanitation, irrigation, even cooking the food we eat.
