“South Africa’s TNPA Seeks Proposals for Dual Solar-Powered Seawater Desalination Plants”

To bolster climate-resilient infrastructure at its Nelson Mandela Bay Ports, South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has launched three Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for the development of two solar-powered seawater desalination plants and a renewable energy power system.

In light of the climate change risks facing its operations, Transnet is embracing green technologies and renewable energy as part of its shift towards a lower carbon footprint.

These initiatives are part of TNPA’s strategic plan to boost sustainability, enhance resilience to climate change, and lower energy costs across its commercial ports.

The two RFPs for the desalination plants call for the design, construction, and operation of facilities capable of producing approximately 0.8 million liters and 0.5 million liters of potable water per day for the Port Elizabeth and Ngqura ports, respectively. These plants are expected to ensure a more reliable freshwater supply for port operations.

The third RFP seeks proposals for a 7 MW hybrid renewable energy plant, including a 6 MWh battery storage system, at the Port of Ngqura. This plant aims to reduce carbon emissions from port operations and enhance the reliability of the energy supply.

Advocate Phyllis Difeto, TNPA Acting Chief Executive, remarked, “Sustainability is emerging as a crucial strategy for global shipping, driving the need for greener and cleaner initiatives. The Ports Authority is committed to advancing a port system that is efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.”
