SAMSUNG E&A Secures $1.7 Billion EPC Contract from TA’ZIZ in UAE

TA’ZIZ has awarded a $1.7 billion (AED 6.2 billion) engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to SAMSUNG E&A for the development of one of the world’s largest methanol plants in Al Ruwais Industrial City, located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region.

This project marks a major milestone in TA’ZIZ’s mission to drive the UAE’s economic diversification by establishing new chemical value chains. The 1.8 million tons per annum (mtpa) facility will be the first methanol production plant in the UAE.

Set for completion in 2028, the plant will be powered by clean energy from the grid, ensuring it operates as one of the most energy-efficient methanol production facilities globally.

Mashal Saoud Al-Kindi, CEO of TA’ZIZ, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This landmark EPC contract award represents a crucial step in realizing TA’ZIZ’s vision of fostering industrial growth in the UAE. By developing a world-class integrated chemicals ecosystem in the Al Dhafra region, the plant will reinforce the UAE’s leadership in sustainable chemicals production and further ADNOC’s ambition to be a global frontrunner in the sector.”

Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of SAMSUNG E&A, highlighted the collaboration’s impact, saying, “We are honored to partner with TA’ZIZ on this transformative project. This achievement reflects our shared commitment to industrial innovation, economic diversification, and sustainable development. The facility will position the UAE as a global hub for advanced methanol production.”

During its first phase, TA’ZIZ aims to produce 4.7 mtpa of chemicals by 2028, including methanol, low-carbon ammonia, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer, and caustic soda. Several of these chemicals will be produced domestically for the first time, reinforcing TA’ZIZ’s strategic objective of expanding the local chemicals industry and driving economic growth through industrialization.
