India’s NTPC Green Energy Ltd is set to develop a $21 billion green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, designed to produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen and 7,500 tonnes of derivatives daily. The project, part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, aims to significantly contribute to the country’s renewable energy capacity target of 500 GW by 2030.
The ‘NTPC Green Energy LTD Green Hydrogen Hub’ will integrate 20 GW of renewable energy capacity, making it one of the largest green hydrogen production facilities in India. Key derivatives to be produced at the Pudimadaka hub include green methanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with a primary focus on export markets.
This strategic initiative is expected to boost domestic electrolyser manufacturing, potentially leveraging technologies from Reliance Industries or Larsen & Toubro (L&T). As hydrogen demand in India continues to surge, the project aligns with the government’s drive to position the nation as a leader in green hydrogen production and innovation.
Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced the plans ahead of his visit to Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s renewable energy portfolio. A government statement highlighted that the PM would “lay the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art facility.”
India’s recent green hydrogen auction underscored the growing demand, with an oversubscription of 626,500 tonnes annually, surpassing the capped 450,000 tonnes. The scheme provides a three-year incentive for producers, offering subsidies of $0.61/kg in the first year, $0.49/kg in the second, and $0.37/kg in the third.
As part of the country’s broader energy transition strategy, NTPC’s green hydrogen hub marks a milestone in India’s pursuit of sustainable development and global leadership in the hydrogen economy.
