Poland’s decision to launch a new production line for high-energy explosives represents a major milestone in Europe’s defence industrial landscape. On 24 November 2025, Nitro-Chem S.A. and PROZAP Sp. z o.o.—a subsidiary of Grupa Azoty—formally signed an agreement to undertake the design and engineering of a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the production of RDX (hexogen), with the potential to also produce HMX (octogen).
The agreement focuses on the preparation of FEED-level (Front-End Engineering Design) technical documentation, marking the first tangible phase of this strategic investment. The new production line will be integrated within Nitro-Chem’s existing facilities, leveraging the company’s operational infrastructure while significantly expanding its capabilities in advanced explosive materials manufacturing.
This development is aligned with broader trends in European defence strategy, which emphasize the expansion of domestic production capacity and the reduction of dependency on foreign suppliers for critical munitions components. By investing in high-energy explosive production, Poland aims not only to strengthen its national defence industrial base but also to contribute to the resilience and strategic autonomy of Europe’s defence supply chains.
Industry analysts note that the production of RDX and HMX, key ingredients in modern military ordnance, is a highly specialized process requiring stringent safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Establishing this capability domestically underscores Poland’s commitment to advanced defence manufacturing and positions Nitro-Chem and Grupa Azoty as leading players in Europe’s high-energy materials sector.
