JSW Group and POSCO Group Partner to Develop 5 MTPA Integrated Steel Plant in India

In a significant boost to India’s manufacturing sector, JSW Group, one of the country’s fastest-growing conglomerates, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Korea’s POSCO Group. This strategic partnership aims to develop an integrated steel plant in India with an initial capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

India’s surging steel demand, fueled by robust economic growth, is outpacing GDP expansion, creating a prime opportunity for industry modernization and capacity expansion. The proposed collaboration between JSW and POSCO seeks to address this demand by establishing a state-of-the-art steel manufacturing facility.

Beyond steel production, the MoU outlines potential joint ventures in battery materials and renewable energy. As the global shift toward sustainable energy gains momentum, both companies recognize the strategic importance of investing in battery materials, aligning with India’s growing electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem and carbon reduction commitments.

Renewable energy is another key area of focus. With India’s accelerating energy transition, the partnership will explore renewable solutions to power the steel plant and reduce its carbon footprint. This aligns with both companies’ commitment to sustainable industrial practices and environmental responsibility.

The MoU was signed at JSW Group’s corporate headquarters in Mumbai, attended by key executives including Mr. Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of JSW Group, and Mr. Chang In-hwa, Chairman of POSCO. This landmark agreement strengthens economic ties between India and South Korea while driving advancements in India’s steel production capacity and sustainability efforts.

Sajjan Jindal emphasized the broader impact of this collaboration, highlighting its potential to shape India’s steel industry while fostering renewable energy and EV ecosystem development. Mr. Chang In-hwa echoed this vision, underscoring the partnership’s role in driving economic growth and environmental sustainability across both nations.

As JSW and POSCO move forward with this strategic alliance, the venture is expected to set new industry benchmarks in technology and sustainability, positioning India as a leader in next-generation manufacturing.
