GreenGo Energy, a Denmark-based company, has secured its first public-private partnership (PPP) agreement in Africa to launch a large-scale green hydrogen project in Mauritania.
The agreement, signed by Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Khaled, and GreenGo Energy’s CEO, Karsten Nielsen, grants the company access to over 100,000 hectares of land near the capital, Nouakchott, for its ambitious “megaton moon” project.
GreenGo Energy will begin with detailed site and geotechnical surveys, as well as the collection of meteorological data and feasibility studies to move the project forward.
The first phase of the project, slated for completion by the end of 2029, will include 500 megawatts (MW) of electrolysis, 600 MW of onshore wind, and 600 MWp of solar power, with the goal of producing approximately 339,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.
When fully completed, the project will have a capacity of 6 gigawatts (GW) of electrolysis, 6.8 GW of onshore wind, and 6.3 GWp of solar power.
The financing for this vast project will come from GreenGo Energy’s partnership model, which will involve large-scale strategic investors. However, financial details have not been disclosed.
