West International Holding (WIH), a joint venture between Chinese and Ugandan investors, is set to embark on the construction of a 3.0 million tonnes per annum (Mta) cement grinding station in Jinja, located in Njeru, Buikwe, Uganda. This marks the second major project by WIH in the region, following their initial cement venture in Moroto.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the new plant, which will consist of two 1.5 Mta units, highlighted the significant impact the project is expected to have on the local economy. The first phase of the Buikwe plant is slated for completion by September 2025, creating over 1,500 direct and indirect jobs during and after construction.
Once operational, the facility will primarily serve the Central Ugandan market, meeting the rising demand for cement in the region. Additionally, the plant is strategically positioned to cater to export markets in neighboring Tanzania and Kenya, further boosting Uganda’s industrial output and trade relations.
WIH’s investment in the Buikwe plant reflects the company’s commitment to contributing to Uganda’s infrastructure development and economic growth. The plant is expected to enhance the supply chain within the construction industry, reduce the cost of cement, and support ongoing and future infrastructure projects in the region.
