Welsh Water Launches £752 Million Tender for Network Overhaul”

Welsh Water has launched a search for contractors to handle a £752 million overhaul of its water network infrastructure, according to Construction Enquirer. This upgrade is part of the not-for-profit company’s Water Network Alliance and aims to improve asset health through a broad programme that includes customer meter installations, network leak repairs, and routine maintenance.

The contract, spanning up to eight years and covering AMP8 (2025-2030) and the early stages of AMP9, will be split into two main segments. The first segment, valued at approximately £400 million, focuses on metering, customer appointment programmes, and water network maintenance. The second segment, with an estimated value of £352 million, targets mains rehabilitation and pipeline projects, addressing various complexities of pressurised pipes.

Ian Christie, Managing Director of Water Service, Capital Delivery, and Asset Planning at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, emphasized, “This contract is a key component of our efforts to continuously enhance our service to customers in Wales and Herefordshire. We have ambitious targets for leakage, supply interruptions, and water quality, and achieving these goals requires close collaboration with our sector partners.”

Christie also highlighted the contract’s scope and value as a testament to Welsh Water’s commitment to delivering high-quality service and value to customers.

In addition to this contract, Welsh Water plans to invite tenders in October for a separate framework focused on wastewater improvements. The AMP8 Wastewater Networks framework, which begins in November 2025 and also extends up to eight years, will be divided into four regional lots:

  • Lot 1: North Wales Wastewater Network Repair & Maintenance and Network Operating Services
  • Lot 2: Hereford, Powys & Gwent Wastewater Network Operating Services
  • Lot 3: Southwest, Swansea, Valleys & Cardiff Wastewater Network Operating Services
  • Lot 4: South Wales, Hereford & Powys – Repair and Maintenance
