Wellstar Plans 230-Bed Hospital in Acworth, Georgia

Wellstar Health System has announced plans to build a new 230-bed hospital in Acworth, Georgia, to meet the growing demand for healthcare services in the region. The health system has filed a Letter of Intent with the Georgia Department of Community Health, initiating the process to secure a Certificate of Need for the project.

The proposed hospital will be located on Cobb Parkway, directly across from the existing Wellstar Acworth Health Park. It aims to enhance Wellstar’s long-standing commitment to the community by delivering integrated, high-quality care in collaboration with Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center, Wellstar Paulding Medical Center, and other facilities across the region.

Wellstar is set to submit a detailed Certificate of Need application by June 23. The submission will include architectural renderings and a comprehensive plan outlining how the hospital will serve the community’s health and wellness needs. To ensure local voices are heard, Wellstar will also form a community advisory council to engage residents throughout the development process.

Local leaders have welcomed the proposal, citing Acworth’s rapid population growth and the need for expanded healthcare services.

The new hospital is part of Wellstar’s broader strategy to expand access across Georgia, with over $1.4 billion invested in major initiatives. These include a new 200-bed tower at Wellstar Kennestone, a 56-bed expansion at Wellstar Paulding, a new oncology center at Wellstar Spalding, and a planned 100-bed hospital in Columbia County. Wellstar also partners with Augusta University Medical College of Georgia’s Center for Digital Health to connect rural hospitals with specialty care.

Headquartered in Cobb County, Wellstar provides more than $1 billion annually in charity and uncompensated care—more than any other health system in Georgia. The organization also supports community well-being through partnerships focused on education, housing, food security, and workforce development.
