VARD has signed a contract with Taiwan-based Dong Fang Offshore (DFO) for the design and construction of a state-of-the-art Offshore Subsea Construction Vessel (OSCV), based on the VARD 3 39 design. The agreement includes options for additional vessels, with the total contract value estimated at $125 million.
This marks the third vessel VARD is building for DFO, following the two Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) contracted in May 2024. The partnership reflects DFO’s ambition to become the supplier of choice for high-standard cable installation and repair in the offshore wind and telecom sectors, as well as a leading provider of O&M solutions for offshore wind farms and turnkey marine construction across the Asia-Pacific region.
A Versatile and Future-Ready Design
The newly contracted vessel is a highly adaptable platform, optimized for subsea operations, offshore wind O&M activities, and both cable installation and repair projects. It features an advanced hull design and powerful propulsion system to ensure excellent seakeeping, reduced motions, and superior station-keeping capabilities. The vessel will be equipped with battery-hybrid propulsion, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental performance and operational efficiency.
Key onboard equipment includes:
-
A 250 MT active heave-compensated offshore crane, enabling advanced subsea operations.
-
A 1,200 m² work deck prepped for cable repair and lay operations.
-
ROV hangars on both port and starboard sides, ready for built-in ROV systems.
-
Preparations for a motion-compensated gangway, under-deck carousel, and large trencher.
-
Helideck-ready platform for future installations.
Accommodation and Crew Facilities
The vessel will offer 90 cabins to accommodate up to 130 personnel. High-standard operational facilities include offices, briefing rooms, a conference room/cinema, and spacious dayrooms. All interiors will be completed to a premium finish by Vard Interiors, creating a comfortable and productive environment for crew and mission personnel.
Integrated Systems and Digital Oversight
Vard Electro will deliver a fully integrated power and automation system, optimized for energy efficiency and reduced emissions. The system includes:
-
SeaQ Green Pilot, which collects and analyzes vessel data via cloud connectivity, supporting environmental monitoring and performance optimization.
-
SeaQ Bridge, a centralized control and monitoring system that enhances safety and efficiency by consolidating key vessel operations into a single interface.
Vard Interiors will also provide the HVAC-R systems, piping, and interior outfitting, focused on operational functionality and crew well-being.
