VARD Begins Steel Cut for Second Hybrid Vessel

Norwegian shipbuilder VARD has cut the first steel for the second hybrid-powered ocean energy construction vessel (OECV) being built for fellow Norwegian company Island Offshore, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of the operator’s advanced offshore fleet.

This milestone comes approximately four months after the first steel was cut for the initial vessel, Island Evolution, which was ordered in May 2024. Island Offshore exercised its option for a second vessel, named Island Explorer, three months later.

The steel-cutting ceremony for Island Explorer took place on July 1 at Vard Shipyards Romania – Tulcea, officially kicking off its construction. Meanwhile, Island Evolution is currently under construction at Vard Shipyards Romania – Braila.

Both vessels are of the VARD 3 25 design, measuring 120 meters in length, and are tailored for a wide range of subsea operations. These include inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR), pipe laying, subsea infrastructure installation, diving support, and support for remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs).

In addition to traditional offshore roles, the vessels are designed for renewable energy operations such as walk-to-work, commissioning, cable laying and repair, trenching, survey work, and are prepped for the installation of a gangway system.

VARD will act as the total system integrator for the vessels. Key contributions include:

  • Vard Interiors, providing interior fit-out and a green HVAC R system

  • Vard Electro, delivering integrated SeaQ solutions, such as:

    • SeaQ Power with energy storage systems and shore connection

    • SeaQ Bridge with full integration

    • A comprehensive SeaQ Communication network, including IT infrastructure and entertainment systems

Final outfitting, commissioning, and vessel delivery will be carried out at one of VARD’s shipyards in Norway.

The first vessel, Island Evolution, is scheduled for delivery in Q1 2027.
