The Northern Vietnam LNG Terminal (NVLT), designed with a total import capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), will be developed in two phases. The initial phase, with an estimated capacity of 0.7 mtpa, is projected to commence operations by 2027, pending the execution of definitive agreements, regulatory approvals, and other conditions.
The terminal aims to bolster energy infrastructure in northern Vietnam and meet the region’s growing energy demands. In late 2021, ITECO and JAPEX signed a share purchase agreement to advance the project, initially targeting a final investment decision (FID) by the second half of 2022.
The first phase of the development includes the construction of a 50,000 cubic meter (cbm) LNG storage tank, designed to handle up to 650,000 metric tonnes of LNG annually, along with necessary jetty facilities. An additional 30,000-cbm storage tank is planned for the latter part of the decade.
In other news, Excelerate Energy’s floating storage regasification unit (FSRU), the Excelsior, is set to support Germany’s Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal. The 138,000-cbm FSRU will be stationed at a new island jetty in Jade Bay, northwestern Germany, by late 2024. Vaporized natural gas from the unit will be transmitted to shore via ECOnnect Energy’s IQuay F-Class System and integrated into the Open Grid Europe (OGE) gas grid.
