US-BASED AXPO LAUNCHES BIOMETHANE PROJECT IN PORTUGAL

US-based energy company Axpo  3 announced the launch of a biomethane project in Portugal that aims to utilise agricultural waste to produce over 15 GWh/year of renewable energy. The project will entail an initial investment of approximately €8mn.

Axpo’s subsidiaries, Axpo Iberia and Goldenergy, will develop a production plant in northern Portugal. Goldenergy, in partnership with local stakeholders, will procure the plant’s entire production and inject it into Portugal’s natural gas network. The facility is slated to commence operations in late 2025.

The agreement forged between Axpo’s subsidiaries, the municipality of Vila do Conde, and local farming enterprise Teixeira do Batel will see Axpo undertake the construction, commissioning, and operation of a biomethane production plant.

Axpo said this initiative aligns with its ambitious objective to achieve a total annual biomethane production of up to 1 TWh on the Iberian Peninsula by 2030
