Uniper Partners with Liquid Wind to Develop eMethanol Project in Sweden

German energy company Uniper has chosen Swedish eFuel company Liquid Wind to develop its sustainable electrofuel project, NorthStarH2. This initiative, based in Östersund, Sweden, aims to produce eMethanol for the shipping and chemical industries.

The NorthStarH2 plant will use biogenic carbon dioxide and renewable electricity to generate over 100,000 tons of eMethanol. Liquid Wind has been selected to lead the project, leveraging a standardized design and digital platform that facilitates efficient replication to replace fossil fuels and feedstock.

Uniper has already secured an agreement with Swedish power company Jämtkraft to access land and electricity grid connections for the project.

Claes Fredriksson, CEO and founder of Liquid Wind, stated: “We are thrilled to be involved in Uniper’s NorthStarH2 project. This initiative underscores Sweden’s role in driving the green transition through its renewable resources, and highlights the vital role eFuel will play in electrifying sectors such as shipping, aviation, and chemicals. This collaboration with Uniper is a significant milestone for Liquid Wind, demonstrating the importance of partnerships and cutting-edge technology in combating global warming.”

Jan Taschenberger, COO of New Green Power and Gas, remarked: “NorthStarH2 is crucial to Uniper’s commitment to advancing the energy transition. This innovative project in green methanol production represents a groundbreaking collaboration with Liquid Wind, both technologically and in terms of partnership. We believe that visionary projects like this can only succeed through a collaborative approach. Together, we are shaping the future of sustainable energy.”

This new collaboration builds on a strategic partnership agreement signed earlier this year between Uniper and Liquid Wind, aimed at advancing the development of fossil-free eMethanol production facilities. The agreement focuses on combining their expertise to drive commercial-scale development, reduce costs and risks, and enhance the supply chain. The companies plan to explore opportunities for joint development, power supply, and eMethanol offtake, complementing Liquid Wind’s ongoing development efforts.
