UAE’s SNOC Eyes CCS Potential, Gas Exploration

Sharjah National Oil Company (SNOC) has initiated two significant studies in collaboration with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and global services leader SLB (formerly Schlumberger). These studies aim to explore the feasibility of capturing and storing a substantial portion of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) within SNOC’s Sajaa field.

The first study, conducted in partnership with Sumitomo, focuses on assessing the technical and economic viability of carbon capture and storage (CCS) at the Sajaa field. Sumitomo, known for its expertise in energy and infrastructure, brings valuable experience to the table, helping SNOC evaluate the potential for reducing CO2 emissions and contributing to the UAE’s broader climate goals. This collaboration aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change by exploring innovative solutions for carbon management.

The second study, in collaboration with SLB, delves into the technical aspects of CO2 injection and storage within the Sajaa field’s geological formations. SLB, a world-renowned oilfield services company, will provide its advanced technology and expertise in subsurface evaluation to determine the suitability of the field for long-term CO2 storage. The study aims to identify the capacity of the Sajaa field to store CO2 securely and efficiently, while also evaluating potential challenges associated with the process.

SNOC’s Sajaa field, one of the UAE’s oldest and most significant natural gas fields, offers a promising site for these CCS initiatives due to its extensive infrastructure and existing subsurface data. If successful, these studies could pave the way for the Sajaa field to become a central hub for carbon storage in the region, contributing to the UAE’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint and advancing sustainable energy practices.

By launching these studies, SNOC underscores its commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive approach to addressing climate change. The company aims to play a pivotal role in the UAE’s transition towards a low-carbon future by exploring carbon capture and storage as a viable solution for managing industrial CO2 emissions.

The collaboration with Sumitomo and SLB reflects a growing trend among energy companies to partner with global leaders in technology and infrastructure to tackle the challenges of climate change. As the world increasingly turns its attention to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, initiatives like SNOC’s could set a precedent for other energy companies in the Middle East and beyond.

SNOC’s exploration into CCS also complements its ongoing efforts to enhance gas production and optimize resources within the UAE. By integrating CCS with its existing operations, SNOC aims to maximize the economic value of its assets while contributing to global environmental objectives.

These studies represent a significant step forward in the UAE’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions and its commitment to achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2050. As SNOC and its partners continue to advance these initiatives, the Sajaa field could become a model for carbon capture and storage in the region, showcasing the potential for combining traditional energy production with cutting-edge environmental technologies.
