A consortium comprising TotalEnergies, Eni, and QatarEnergy has signed an agreement with the Lebanese government to enter a new offshore exploration permit, reinforcing international interest in the country’s hydrocarbon potential.
The agreement covers Block 8, where the partners will begin an initial exploration programme focused on further evaluating the area’s prospectivity. The first phase of work will include the acquisition of a 1,200 square kilometre 3D seismic survey, aimed at improving subsurface understanding and identifying potential drilling targets.
Under the terms of the permit, TotalEnergies will serve as operator with a 35% stake, while Eni also holds 35%. QatarEnergy owns the remaining 30% interest in the block.
Commenting on the development, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, said the consortium remains committed to exploring offshore Lebanon despite earlier setbacks.
“Although the drilling of the Qana well on Block 9 did not give positive results, we remain committed to pursue our exploration activities in Lebanon,” Pouyanné said. “We will now focus our efforts on Block 8, together with our partners Eni and QatarEnergy and in close cooperation with Lebanese authorities.”
The move highlights Lebanon’s ongoing efforts to advance offshore exploration and attract international energy companies, as the country seeks to unlock potential gas resources and strengthen long-term energy security.
