Tata Steel UISL has unveiled an ambitious plan to convert all food waste generated in Jamshedpur, India, into biogas by March 2026. At a recent press conference, Managing Director Ritu Raj Sinha highlighted the potential of this initiative to revolutionize waste management in the city. If successful, Jamshedpur will become the first city to fully utilize its food waste for biogas production.
Currently, Jamshedpur produces approximately 260 tonnes of waste daily, with food waste accounting for around 40% of this total. Sinha encouraged local hotels, restaurants, and households to join the effort, noting the significant environmental and operational benefits of converting waste into biogas.
The initiative is gaining traction, with 20 local establishments already installing biogas waste management systems, including five prominent hotels and restaurants. On August 21, Tata Steel UISL inaugurated biogas systems at Akino Luxury Hotel, Dasaprakash South Indian Restaurant, and Kerala Samajam Model School (KSMS).
During the ceremony, the Chief Divisional Manager of Tata Steel UISL emphasized the importance of biogas technology in managing food waste effectively. He noted that converting waste to biogas will help alleviate the pressure on landfills and support sustainable waste management practices.
