Synthica Energy Breaks Ground on New RNG Plant in San Antonio

Cincinnati-based Synthica Energy has officially started construction on a new Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) plant in San Antonio, marking a significant milestone for the region’s waste management and energy sectors. The groundbreaking ceremony, held at 4318 N IH 35 in Bexar County, was attended by dozens of regional business leaders, local officials, and VIPs, including Synthica co-founders Grant Gibson and Sam Schutte.

Expected to be operational by 2026, the facility will be the first RNG plant in San Antonio, diverting nearly 250,000 tons of organic waste from local landfills annually. By using anaerobic digestion technology, the plant will convert food and beverage manufacturing waste and other organic materials into RNG, significantly reducing CO2 and methane emissions.

“The San Antonio RNG facility will redefine how we manage organic waste, creating environmental benefits while lowering emissions and waste transport costs,” said Grant Gibson, co-founder and chief development officer at Synthica Energy. “We’re building a platform that combines technology with sustainability, creating a win-win for both our customers and the communities we serve.”

The facility’s strategic location will reduce transportation distances for waste producers, such as food and beverage manufacturers, cutting costs and emissions in the process. The plant is also expected to generate jobs and stimulate local economic growth.

Sarah Carabias Rush, chief economic development officer of greater

, praised the project: “Synthica Energy’s new RNG facility represents a major step forward in sustainable development for our region. It reflects San Antonio’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology for both economic and environmental benefits.”

As the first facility of its kind in the Greater San Antonio area, the project underscores the region’s growing focus on sustainable development and innovative waste management solutions.
