“South32’s Hermosa Project Secures Engineering and Procurement Victory with Worley”

We are thrilled to announce our recent contract award for the comprehensive engineering and procurement services pertaining to both the underground infrastructure and surface non-process facilities at the zinc-lead-silver Taylor deposit within South32’s Hermosa project located in Arizona.

Within the scope of this contract, our responsibilities encompass the intricate design and procurement processes related to the underground mechanical and electrical infrastructure, catering to excavation, power distribution, dewatering, and the establishment of maintenance and ore handling systems.

Furthermore, our expertise will be instrumental in integrating crucial components such as ventilation, shaft transport, and communication infrastructure for the underground operations, in addition to designing the surface non-process facilities.

Our dedicated project team will be stationed in Phoenix, Arizona, drawing upon the wealth of knowledge and experience from our global mining experts to collaborate closely with South32 and its partners. Our primary focus lies in ensuring the safety of design and timely project execution.

The Hermosa project distinguishes itself with a commitment to reducing water consumption by an impressive 75% compared to other regional mines. Moreover, it is poised to leverage automation and cutting-edge technologies to further minimize CO2 emissions associated with mining operations.

Tom Foster, President of US Operations and Worley Consulting, expressed enthusiasm about this milestone collaboration, highlighting its significance as our inaugural venture with South32 in North America. He emphasized our unwavering dedication to the US mining sector and our pivotal role in supplying essential minerals crucial for the ongoing energy transition.

In partnership with South32, we aspire to adopt a forward-thinking, data-centric approach, transforming the project into a ‘digital asset.’ This strategy ensures seamless updates, efficient operations, streamlined maintenance, and facilitates future expansions throughout the mine’s lifecycle. Leveraging our extensive experience in project delivery, both underground and surface, we are poised to work alongside South32 and other stakeholders to successfully deliver this critical project.
