Sakos Energy Navigation Advances with LR1 Newbuild Initiative

Greek owner Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) is set to expand its tanker fleet with the addition of five newbuild LR1 vessels.

The New York-listed firm, which earlier this year ordered a 154,400 dwt shuttle tanker from Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, is in “firm discussions” with a Far Eastern yard for the construction of these new vessels.

While specific details are yet to be disclosed, the first LR1 tanker is slated for delivery in the second quarter of 2027, with the remaining four expected to be delivered throughout 2028.

This expansion brings TEN’s newbuilding program to a total of 12 ships, which includes three shuttle tankers, two Suezmax vessels, and two MR product tankers, alongside the five new LR1s.
