Saipem Receives Full Notice to Proceed for Stockholm Exergi’s Bioenergy CO₂ Capture Project

Saipem has received a full notice to proceed from Stockholm Exergi, the district of Stockholm’s energy company, for a large-scale CO₂ capture project at its bio-cogeneration plant in Sweden. This follows the successful financial closure of the project.

Project Scope & Significance
  • Contract Value: ~€600 million

  • Scope: Engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of carbon capture, CO₂ storage, and ship-loading systems

  • Capacity: The plant will capture 800,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually from the biomass-fueled Värtaverket power plant in Stockholm, achieving net-negative emissions

This project strengthens Saipem’s position as a leader in carbon management and decarbonization solutions, leveraging its expertise across the entire CO₂ value chain.

A Milestone for Carbon Removal

Stockholm Exergi, with funding from the European Innovation Fund and the Swedish Energy Agency, will be among the first companies globally to develop a Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) model. This will enable the issuance of Carbon Removal Certificates for trading on the voluntary market.

Saipem: Driving Energy Transition
