SABIC to Establish New Engineering Thermoplastics Compounding Facility in China

SABIC has announced an investment agreement with the Fujian government, formalized on August 1, to establish a new engineering thermoplastics compounding plant in Fujian Province, China. The agreement was signed at a ceremony in Riyadh, attended by key figures including Zhou Zuyi, Party Secretary of Fujian Province; Ahmed Al-Zahrani, Assistant Minister for Development and Excellence at the Saudi Ministry of Energy; and Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, SABIC CEO.

The agreement, signed by SABIC’s Executive Vice President of Polymers, Sami Al-Osaimi, and Ma Changjian, Deputy Director of the Fujian Zhangzhou Gulei Port Economic Development Zone Administration Committee, highlights SABIC’s commitment to expanding its presence in China and enhancing its service to local customers with innovative, high-quality solutions.

Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh remarked, “This investment marks a pivotal moment for SABIC’s expansion in China and reaffirms our dedication to the country. By collaborating with upstream and downstream partners, we aim to boost our compounding capabilities and offer innovative, high-quality material solutions to this strategic market. We look forward to growing together with our global and local partners.”

The new plant will be situated in the Gulei Port Economic Development Zone, Zhangzhou, Fujian. It will focus on producing pelletized LEXAN™ Polycarbonate (PC) and CYCOLOY™ PC/ABS blends. These materials will cater to industries such as electrical and consumer electronics, automotive, and emerging fields like solar energy, electrification, and 5G. The facility will feature compounding lines, color development capabilities, and advanced equipment for developing new engineering plastics solutions.

In addition to this new venture, SABIC operates a Technology Center in Shanghai and compounding plants in Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Chongqing. The new plant will complement SABIC’s existing joint ventures – SINOPEC SABIC Tianjin Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (SSTPC) and SABIC FUJIAN Petrochemicals Co. Ltd. (SFPC) – and enhance its ability to deliver tailored solutions and products. SABIC’s expansion in China underscores its commitment to advancing innovation in the global chemical industry.
