Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) has officially commenced construction of its first compressed biogas (CBG) plant in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, the company announced this week. The facility marks a significant step in RIL’s broader strategy to develop a network of CBG plants across India as part of its commitment to sustainability and energy transition.
The plant will utilize agricultural residue, organic waste, and other biomass feedstocks to produce compressed biogas, a renewable fuel that can be used in transportation, power generation, and as a replacement for industrial natural gas. The initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme, which aims to boost CBG production and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Once operational, the Andhra Pradesh facility is expected to process hundreds of tonnes of biomass daily, generating clean energy while also creating rural employment opportunities and supporting local farmers by providing a market for agricultural waste.
Reliance’s foray into biogas production further strengthens its clean energy portfolio, which includes investments in solar, hydrogen, and advanced bioenergy solutions under its New Energy business division. The company plans to build multiple such plants across the country to contribute meaningfully to India’s net-zero targets and circular economy goals.
