ReconAfrica Targets 365 Million Barrels of Unrisked Oil at Prospect 1 in Namibia’s Kavango Basin

Reconnaissance Energy Africa Ltd. (ReconAfrica) is targeting 365 million barrels of unrisked and 32 million barrels of risked prospective light/medium oil resources at Prospect 1, located in the Kavango Basin in northeastern Namibia. The figures are based on the latest prospective resources report by independent reserves evaluator Netherland, Sewell, & Associates, Inc. (NSAI), with Prospect 1 identified as Location 63 in the report.

Located onshore within Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) 73, Prospect 1 is the largest prospect ReconAfrica plans to drill to date. The company reports that pre-construction activities are progressing on schedule and that pre-drill evaluations have been completed.

According to the company, the drilling schematic targets a depth of 3,800 metres, with the potential to drill deeper, similar to the Naingopo exploration well. The Otavi section, a key reservoir target, is expected to be between 1,500 and 1,800 metres thick, depending on the final depth achieved.

ReconAfrica notes that insights gained from the Naingopo well have significantly enhanced the geological model of the Damara Fold Belt, particularly in terms of time and depth migration for the Mulden and Otavi formations. In Naingopo, the company encountered over 50 metres of reservoir-quality carbonates along with oil shows, reinforcing confidence in the play.

ReconAfrica President and CEO Brian Reinsborough commented on the progress:

“We are making great strides as we prepare to drill one of our largest and most promising prospects. The results from the Naingopo exploration well, announced in January 2025, have strengthened our confidence in the potential of Prospect 1. We remain on track to spud the well this quarter and are excited about the opportunity to unlock the significant potential of the Damara Fold Belt.”
