QatarEnergy has announced plans to build a new world-scale urea production complex, which will more than double Qatar’s current urea output. This ambitious project aims to enhance global food production and security by constructing three ammonia production lines to feed four new large-scale urea production trains in Mesaieed Industrial City. Once operational, these facilities will boost Qatar’s urea production from 6 million tons per year to 12.4 million tons per year, positioning Qatar as the world’s largest urea producer. The first urea train is expected to begin production by the end of this decade.
The announcement was made by His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, during a press conference at the company’s headquarters in Doha. Minister Al-Kaabi highlighted Qatar’s over 50 years of experience in ammonia and urea production, noting that this project will strengthen Qatar’s global leadership in urea production and significantly contribute to global food security.
Minister Al-Kaabi also emphasized the strategic importance of the Mesaieed Industrial City location, which offers excellent infrastructure for the petrochemical and fertilizer industries. The city’s export port, one of the largest in the MENA region, will enhance Qatar’s export capabilities, establishing Mesaieed as the world’s urea production hub.
In his address, Minister Al-Kaabi reiterated QatarEnergy’s commitment to providing essential energy products, supporting economic growth, and improving global energy and food security. He stressed the need for a balanced approach to meet increasing demand while responsibly managing Qatar’s natural resources.
Minister Al-Kaabi concluded by expressing gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, for his leadership and support of Qatar’s energy sector. This project marks a significant step in QatarEnergy’s efforts to bolster global energy and food security and reinforce Qatar’s leadership in the global fertilizer industry.
