QatarEnergy has unveiled plans for a massive new urea production complex that will significantly increase Qatar’s urea output, positioning the country as a key player in global food security and agricultural productivity.
The ambitious project involves constructing three ammonia production lines that will provide the necessary feedstock for four world-scale urea production trains in Mesaieed Industrial City.
Once completed, these new facilities will more than double Qatar’s urea production capacity, boosting it from the current 6 million tons per annum to 12.4 million tons per annum. The first of the new urea trains is expected to come online before the decade’s end.
His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, made the announcement during a press conference at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha.
“We have been producing ammonia and urea in Qatar for over 50 years,” said H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi. “This groundbreaking project will elevate Qatar to the position of the world’s largest urea producer, reinforcing our commitment to ensuring food security for hundreds of millions globally.”
He added that the development in Mesaieed Industrial City would maximize the use of the existing infrastructure, including one of the MENA region’s largest fertilizer and petrochemical export facilities. This will solidify Mesaieed’s status as the global hub for urea production.
H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized that this initiative is a significant milestone in Qatar’s ongoing efforts to supply essential energy products, fostering global economic growth and enhancing energy and food security through sustainable resource management.
In closing, Minister Al-Kaabi expressed profound gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, for his visionary leadership and unwavering support for Qatar’s energy sector.
