OQAE Green Hydrogen Pilot Project in Duqm, Oman

OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), a subsidiary of the OQ Group, is set to launch a green hydrogen pilot project in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) in Oman. This strategic initiative, featuring an electrolyzer capacity of 10-15 MW, is a major step forward in OQAE’s mission to establish Oman as a global leader in green hydrogen production. The project is designed to provide OQAE with practical, hands-on experience and essential insights to support the country’s long-term green hydrogen strategy.

This pilot project in Duqm will not only advance OQAE’s capabilities in hydrogen production but also serve as a testing ground for real-world applications of green hydrogen technology. By focusing on these practical aspects, the pilot aims to generate valuable data that will inform larger-scale hydrogen initiatives across Oman. This is particularly crucial as Oman strives to meet its ambitious green hydrogen production goals. The country aims to produce 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030, and this pilot project plays a pivotal role in achieving that target.

As part of its strategic focus, OQAE is actively involved in several large-scale green hydrogen projects, including joint ventures such as HYPORT Duqm, in partnership with DEME and BP, which will feature 1.3 GW of renewable energy capacity in Duqm. Another key project is Green Energy Oman (GEO), a collaboration with InterContinental Energy, Enertech Holding Company, and Shell, which plans to supply approximately 4 GW of green power in Duqm. These projects, along with the pilot, are expected to position Oman as a prominent hub for green hydrogen production and innovation.

In addition to its efforts in hydrogen, OQAE is also exploring several innovative applications of clean energy. These include projects aimed at developing low-carbon bunkering solutions, the production of e-fuels like e-Gasoline and e-SAF, and leveraging biogenic CO2 to produce e-Methanol. These projects will not only contribute to Oman’s energy diversification but will also support global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Beyond green hydrogen production, OQAE is also committed to enhancing Oman’s renewable energy infrastructure. The company is pushing forward several other solar and wind energy projects, including the 100 MW North Solar plant in Saih Nihaydah and the 100 MW Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind farms in the southern regions of Oman. These initiatives are part of a broader renewable energy pipeline totaling up to 7 GW across the country, with substantial investments expected in the coming years.

Furthermore, OQAE’s recent agreements and collaborations with key stakeholders like Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) will enhance the company’s ability to expand its market reach. These partnerships position OQAE to play a critical role in Oman’s long-term energy transition and in meeting global clean energy demands.

The green hydrogen pilot project is just one component of a broader strategy that reflects Oman’s commitment to sustainable energy and carbon reduction. By developing and implementing green hydrogen technology, Oman is setting itself up to become a significant player in the global energy landscape, offering clean energy solutions to industries worldwide.

In conclusion, OQAE’s green hydrogen pilot project in Duqm is a crucial step in Oman’s journey toward sustainable energy leadership. As the company continues to develop its portfolio of green hydrogen, solar, and wind energy projects, OQAE is helping to position Oman as a global hub for renewable energy innovation, capable of providing clean, sustainable solutions to meet both local and international energy needs. This pilot will serve as a foundation for future green hydrogen ventures and contribute significantly to Oman’s goal of a greener, more sustainable future.
