OMV Secures €123m Funding for Green Hydrogen Project in Austria

Austrian energy major OMV AG has secured up to €123 million in funding to support the development of its 140MW green hydrogen electrolyser project in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria.

The financing agreement was signed with Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws), the country’s federal development bank. The project had previously received a positive assessment and funding recommendation from the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB), reinforcing its strategic importance within Europe’s clean energy transition.

Alongside the public financing, OMV is committing an investment in the mid-hundreds of millions of euros to the project. In 2024, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) joined the initiative as a minority shareholder, further strengthening its international backing.

Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, using renewable electricity generated from wind, solar, and hydropower. Construction of the plant is already underway, with commissioning targeted for the end of 2027. Upon completion, it will rank among the five largest green hydrogen production facilities in Europe.

A key feature of the project is a 22-kilometre hydrogen pipeline that will directly connect the electrolyser to OMV’s Schwechat refinery, enabling the low-carbon fuel to be used in industrial processes and fuel production.

Commenting on the milestone, Martijn van Koten, OMV’s Executive Vice President for Fuels and Chemicals, said the project would make a significant contribution to the company’s decarbonisation efforts by enabling local production and use of green hydrogen.

The Bruck an der Leitha development represents a major step in OMV’s strategy to reduce emissions across its operations while supporting the broader rollout of hydrogen infrastructure in Austria and across Europe.
