State-run NTPC is actively seeking technology partners, both domestically and internationally, for its Bharat Small Reactors (BSR) initiative as it ventures into the nuclear energy sector.
In the recent Budget proposals for FY25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the government’s intention to collaborate with the private sector for the development of BSRs and research into Bharat Small Modular Reactors (BSMR).
NTPC is exploring nuclear energy to enhance its non-fossil fuel portfolio, with BSRs being a potential solution. The company is on the lookout for technology partners from both local and global firms to support the establishment of BSRs.
Additionally, NTPC is evaluating land in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Karnataka for potential nuclear power plant sites. The final land approvals will be subject to review by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
NTPC has also signed a joint venture agreement with Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) to develop a 2,800-megawatt nuclear power plant in Mahi-Banswada, Rajasthan. With an estimated project cost of ₹51,000 crore, construction is anticipated to begin by the end of FY25, with a projected timeline of approximately eight years for completion.
