State-owned National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) will be a part of a proposed joint venture company set up to establish a new ammonia-urea plant in Assam.
In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, NFL stated that its board has “shown willingness to the proposal of the Department of Fertilizers for becoming part of the proposed joint venture company with 18% equity for setting up a new ammonia-urea complex, Namrup IV Fertilizer Plant, at Namrup, Assam.”
The proposed plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 12.7 lakh tonnes and is aimed at bolstering domestic fertilizer production, reducing import dependence, and supporting the agricultural sector in the northeastern region.
The government had announced the Namrup IV project in the latest budget as part of its broader strategy to enhance self-sufficiency in fertilizer production. The plant will be developed using modern and energy-efficient technology, ensuring environmental sustainability while meeting the growing demand for urea.
Namrup is already home to two operational urea plants under the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL), and the addition of Namrup IV is expected to further strengthen the region’s role in India’s fertilizer industry.
Further details regarding project timelines, investment breakdowns, and additional partners in the joint venture are expected to be finalized in the coming months.
