Area 4 has officially signed contracts to conduct Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the Rovuma LNG project, marking a significant advancement in this major energy venture. The project, which has an updated design featuring an electric LNG (e-LNG) concept, will comprise 12 modules of 1.5 MTA each, collectively producing a total of 18 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually.
Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), the operator of Area 4, has awarded and executed FEED contracts to competing engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms. This phase, expected to last around 16 months, is the final step before a Final Investment Decision (FID) is made, signaling the project’s readiness to move into full-scale development.
This milestone underscores Area 4’s dedication to excellence and innovation within the oil and gas sector. The Rovuma LNG project will not only produce and market natural gas from the rich reservoirs of the Area 4 block in the offshore Rovuma Basin but also bring significant technological advancements to Mozambique’s LNG infrastructure.
The project’s innovative design features modular e-LNG units, which will be fabricated offsite and later assembled at the Afungi site in Mozambique. This modular approach is expected to enhance the project’s competitiveness and flexibility, reduce on-site presence and associated risks, and ensure a more streamlined execution process. Moreover, the new design is anticipated to achieve lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to previous concepts, aligning with global sustainability goals.
Frank Kretschmer, President of ExxonMobil Mozambique, highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating, “The award and execution of the FEED contracts represent a meaningful step forward in developing the world-class Rovuma LNG project. We will continue to work closely with the Government to ensure that this project delivers long-term benefits to the people of Mozambique.”
The collaboration with EPC consortiums during the FEED phase is critical to laying a solid foundation for the successful implementation of the Rovuma LNG project. With a total LNG capacity of 18 million tonnes per annum and a focus on reducing environmental impact, Rovuma LNG is poised to become a cornerstone of Mozambique’s energy future and a key player in the global LNG market.
