Montenegro’s EPCG and EDF Collaborate on Hydropower Projects

Montenegrin state-owned power producer Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with French state-owned energy company Electricité de France (EDF) to collaborate on the development of hydropower plants in Montenegro.

The agreement establishes a framework for long-term dialogue regarding energy transition and low-carbon technology. Under this partnership, EDF will serve as a strategic partner, contributing as a project developer, co-investor, and operator of hydro energy capacities, EPCG stated in a release following the signing on Friday.

The scope of cooperation between the two companies may expand in the future to include projects for photovoltaic plants, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and green hydrogen initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance electricity supply flexibility and facilitate the integration of new renewable energy sources.

EPCG currently boasts 874 MW of installed generation capacity, with 649 MW generated from its two major hydropower plants, Peručica and Piva, and an additional 225 MW from Montenegro’s only thermal power plant, Pljevlja. The company also operates several small hydropower plants and is actively developing various renewable energy projects.
