Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s leading engineering and construction conglomerates, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norway-based Ulstein Group, a global leader in ship design, marine solutions, and shipbuilding. The agreement aims to establish a strategic partnership focused on collaborative ship design and construction, leveraging the complementary strengths of both companies to serve global maritime and defense markets.
The MoU outlines cooperation on the design and development of state-of-the-art vessels, including specialized ships for the offshore, commercial, and defense sectors. The collaboration will focus on integrating Ulstein’s cutting-edge ship design capabilities—renowned for their innovative X-BOW® hull technology, sustainable marine solutions, and expertise in offshore wind and expedition cruise segments—with L&T’s advanced shipbuilding infrastructure, engineering depth, and proven track record in defense and commercial ship construction.
This partnership is expected to unlock new business opportunities in India and international markets, particularly in the growing offshore renewable energy sector, subsea construction, and naval support vessels. It also aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ and maritime self-reliance initiatives, by bringing advanced Norwegian ship design know-how to L&T’s facilities in India.
Commenting on the partnership, senior executives from both L&T and Ulstein emphasized the synergy between Ulstein’s innovation-driven maritime engineering and L&T’s robust industrial capabilities. The companies plan to jointly pursue tenders and shipbuilding programs that demand high-end design sophistication combined with reliable execution.
This MoU marks a significant step in L&T’s continued expansion into high-technology maritime platforms, while giving Ulstein a strong strategic foothold in India—one of the world’s fastest-growing shipbuilding and maritime technology markets.
