Linde to Invest $2 Billion in Hydrogen Supply for Dow’s Path2Zero Project

EDMONTON, ALTA. – Linde, a UK-based firm, announced on August 27 that it will invest over $2 billion to build, own, and operate a state-of-the-art integrated clean hydrogen and atmospheric gases facility in Alberta. This facility will provide clean hydrogen for Dow’s Path2Zero project in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.

The new facility will feature an on-site complex utilizing autothermal reforming along with Linde’s proprietary HISORP carbon capture technology. This setup will produce hydrogen and recover hydrogen from off-gases generated by Dow’s ethylene cracker, according to a Linde press release.

In the initial phase, Linde will supply hydrogen, nitrogen, and other services to support Dow’s net-zero emissions integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives site. The company will also offer hydrogen to existing and new industrial customers aiming to decarbonize their operations. The complex is expected to capture and sequester more than two million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

“This world-class facility will be crucial to the success of Dow’s Path2Zero Project by providing clean hydrogen energy,” said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Provincial Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean in a joint statement. “Alberta is a global leader in hydrogen production and clean energy technology. This investment is a significant win for Alberta’s energy sector and showcases how our business-friendly policies are drawing job-creating investments to the province. We are excited for the construction to begin in 2025 and proud to partner with Linde to advance our hydrogen industry.”

Upon its completion in 2028, the complex will be the largest clean hydrogen production facility in Canada and among the largest globally, the Linde press release added.
