Industrial gas giant Linde has announced plans to construct a second carbon dioxide (CO₂) liquefaction plant in Freeport, Texas, effectively doubling its CO₂ capacity in the Gulf Coast region.
The new facility, scheduled to come online in 2027, will liquefy crude CO₂ captured from MEGlobal America’s ethylene glycol production site at Oyster Creek. Linde already supplies this site with oxygen from its existing air separation unit in Freeport.
The expanded capacity is aimed at meeting increasing demand for CO₂ across multiple sectors, including food and beverage, dry ice production, and low-carbon fuels.
“This investment highlights Linde’s ongoing commitment to supporting industrial growth across the Gulf Coast,” said Amer Akhras, Vice President of Linde’s U.S. South Region.
Notably, Linde’s CO₂ complex in Freeport is the first liquefaction site in the U.S. to earn ISCC PLUS certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification. This voluntary credential verifies the sustainable sourcing of raw materials—such as bio-based, renewable, and recycled inputs—based on rigorous environmental, social, and economic criteria.
The new project aligns with Linde’s broader strategy to provide low-carbon solutions and support the transition to a more sustainable industrial landscape.
