Koppö Energia Oy has selected thyssenkrupp Uhde’s uhde® green methanol technology and awarded a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for its planned e-methanol plant in Kristinestad, Finland. The facility is part of a broader power-to-x (P2X) initiative and is expected to produce 450 metric tons per day (mtpd) of e-methanol in various grades to serve the maritime and e-gasoline fuel markets.
Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, commented:
“We are proud that our technology and implementation expertise will support Koppö Energia’s pioneering project. It highlights the power of cross-industry cooperation in accelerating green methanol adoption.”
Unlike traditional grey methanol, which is produced from natural gas, green or e-methanol is generated through the direct hydrogenation of captured CO₂ using green hydrogen. In this project, renewable hydrogen will be produced via a 200 MW water electrolysis facility powered by green electricity. CO₂ will be captured from a waste incineration plant in Vaasa, Finland, then liquefied and transported to the P2X site.
Thomas Zirngibl, Director at Koppö Energia, added:
“We are very pleased to collaborate with thyssenkrupp Uhde, whose technologies and integration capabilities are key to the success of this project.”
Economic and Environmental Advantages
thyssenkrupp Uhde’s uhde® green methanol technology offers high carbon and hydrogen efficiency, enhancing both the economic viability and sustainability of the project. The patented process significantly reduces purge gases, lowering the facility’s overall carbon intensity.
