KBR and Avina Strike FEED and Technology Licensing Deal for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

KBR has announced that Avina Clean Hydrogen Inc. has chosen its PureSAF℠ technology for a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in the U.S. PureSAF, developed by Swedish Biofuels and exclusively licensed by KBR worldwide, will be central to the project.

As part of the agreement, KBR will provide technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) services for Avina’s facility, which aims to produce 120 million gallons (MMgal) of SAF annually.

“PureSAF is a cutting-edge technology that produces jet fuel fully compatible with conventional jet fuel, using a variety of feedstocks at low costs and on an industrial scale,” said Angelica Hull, Managing Director of Swedish Biofuels. “Our technology not only processes ethanol but can also convert mixed alcohols, carbon dioxide, and synthesis gas into SAF, offering pathways to utilize captured carbon for a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded collaboration with Avina. “In 2023, KBR’s K-GreeN® technology was chosen by Avina for its green ammonia project in the U.S. Avina’s leadership in energy transition projects aligns with KBR’s commitment to advancing decarbonization technologies and ESG goals. Together with Swedish Biofuels, we are eager to support Avina’s diversification into high-potential sustainable growth sectors.”

Vishal Shah, CEO of Avina Clean Hydrogen, commented, “We are thrilled to select KBR’s innovative aviation fuel technology for our ethanol-to-SAF project in Illinois. PureSAF offers significant project-economic advantages, low carbon intensity, and environmental benefits, making it the ideal choice compared to other technologies.”
