In response to recent spring floods that highlighted vulnerabilities in Kazakhstan’s water management system, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Nurlan Baibazarov has announced a significant investment in the sector.
The launch of 16 priority projects will see over KZT 500 billion ($1 billion) invested to enhance the country’s water infrastructure.
Deputy Prime Minister Baibazarov stressed the urgent need for development, noting that the funds will be allocated to the construction of reservoirs, irrigation canals, and improvements in the technical capacities of water management services. These projects are deemed essential for strengthening Kazakhstan’s resilience to natural disasters and supporting agricultural and urban development.
Financing for the projects has been secured on preferential terms from the Islamic Development Bank, providing long-term funding at favorable rates. This financial backing is expected to be pivotal in addressing the longstanding issues within the country’s water management framework.
“As directed by the Head of State, our immediate focus is on upgrading equipment and facilities across the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Simultaneously, we are equipping the Kazvodkhoz system with essential resources,” stated Minister Baibazarov.
The “Zhasyl Damu” initiative will also play a key role, with more than KZT 200 billion ($429 million) allocated for the modernization of the forestry, water management, and emergency response sectors. Initial equipment deliveries under this initiative are expected later this year.
The launch of these projects represents a major step forward in Kazakhstan’s efforts to fortify its water infrastructure. This investment aims to ensure greater resilience against natural disasters and meet the increasing demands of agriculture and urban development. Deputy Prime Minister Baibazarov expressed confidence in the timely execution of these initiatives, emphasizing their importance in safeguarding the nation’s water resources for future generations.
