Iraq has taken a significant stride towards sustainable energy development, signing a $497 million agreement with China’s Shanghai SUS Environment Co. Ltd to build the country’s first waste-to-energy facility. Located in Nahrawan, Baghdad, the plant will process 3,000 tons of garbage daily and generate 100 MW of electricity.
Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2025 and is expected to be completed within two years, according to the National Investment Commission (NIC). This initiative represents a collaborative effort between Iraq’s Ministries of Electricity, Environment, Science, and Technology, and the Baghdad Municipality.
This project marks a crucial milestone in Iraq’s energy transition, addressing both waste management and power generation challenges. Shanghai SUS Environment, founded in 2008, is a global leader in integrated environmental and energy solutions, dedicated to sustainable development.
