The Iraqi cabinet has approved a $480 million Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for the restoration of the Al Dora thermal power plant, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced on Tuesday.
The authorization, which excludes supervision and monitoring services, is part of a broader effort to revive the long-delayed project and enhance Iraq’s power generation capacity.
Iraqi Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadel highlighted the ministry’s progress, stating that electrical energy output increased from 19,000 megawatts at the end of 2022 to 28,000 megawatts—a 40% surge in just two years.
To further boost capacity, the Ministry of Electricity has signed contracts for 15,000 megawatts of new power plants, including:
- 2,430 MW gas-fired power plants
- 3,811 MW combined cycle power plants
- 4,875 MW solar power plants
- 3,500 MW steam power plants
However, record-breaking electricity demand remains a major challenge, with consumption soaring from 27,000 MW to 48,000 MW last summer.
Fadel stressed the need for an integrated strategy and long-term vision to address Iraq’s rising energy demands and ensure sustainable power generation.
