In a strategic move to enhance its logistics and supply chain efficiency, Ambuja Cement has announced a ₹2,500 crore investment in acquiring two cement carriers and eight clinker carriers to strengthen its maritime transportation capabilities. This expansion aligns with the company’s long-term vision of streamlining cement distribution and optimizing cost efficiency.
Major Shipbuilding Investment
The estimated cost for a 38,500-ton Handymax cement carrier is around ₹400 crore, while each 9,200-ton ‘Sanghimax’ clinker carrier will cost approximately ₹200 crore. The company is expected to finalize the shipbuilding contract within the next 15 days, with the order likely going to either Cochin Shipyard or Svan Defence & Heavy Industries—two of India’s leading shipbuilders.
Enhancing Cement Logistics
Ambuja Cement currently operates a fleet of 11 dedicated cement carriers that transport cement from production sites to consumption hubs across India. The addition of these new vessels will significantly increase Ambuja’s maritime transport capacity, ensuring smoother operations, reducing reliance on third-party logistics, and further solidifying its supply chain.
Strategic Growth and Sustainability
The investment not only marks a substantial leap in Ambuja Cement’s logistics infrastructure but also aligns with its commitment to sustainability. Shipping cement and clinker via sea routes reduces road transportation dependency, lowers carbon emissions, and contributes to greener supply chain practices.
With India’s infrastructure and construction sector booming, this move places Ambuja Cement in a stronger position to meet rising cement demand while enhancing cost efficiencies and operational reliability.
