Hystar Grants thyssenkrupp FEED Contract for 4.5 GW Automated Electrolyser Plant

Hystar AS has awarded thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract to develop an automated electrolyser production line for its new 4.5 gigawatt (GW) factory in Høvik, Norway.

This advanced production line will significantly enhance efficiency and scale, expanding Hystar’s output capacity from 100 megawatts (MW) to 4.5 GW. The compact 2,500 m² facility will integrate stack assembly, quality control, and testing into a single space.

Fredrik Mowill, CEO of Hystar, emphasized the importance of this development, noting, “Our new automated GW factory will greatly enhance Hystar’s capacity to deliver cost-effective and efficient solutions for large-scale green hydrogen projects.”

The factory design also features a high-volume supply chain for stack components, enabling rapid production scaling to meet increasing demand.

Michael Menneking, CEO of thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering, remarked, “We are honored to be selected for this critical project. Our expertise will be pivotal in supporting Hystar’s growth in the hydrogen sector.”

Hystar has been actively advancing its green hydrogen initiatives, including recent collaborations with Gassnova and SINTEF to develop and test new electrolyser technologies. This new 4.5 GW project builds on Hystar’s previous expansion from 100 MW to a gigawatt-scale manufacturing capacity.

Thyssenkrupp is also involved in major projects like a 2 GW electrolyser for the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia and a 720 MW electrolyser system for Shell’s hydrogen plant in the Netherlands.
