Hungary Signs Contract for New CCGT Power Plant

A major contract has been signed—under ceremonial conditions—for the development of a cutting-edge combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant at the Tiszaújváros site of MVM Tisza Erőmű Ltd. The agreement marks the official start of the turnkey design, procurement, and construction process for what is set to become Hungary’s most efficient large-scale power generation facility.

Representatives of MVM Tisza Erőmű, a member of the MVM Group, signed the agreement on behalf of the project owner. The contract was awarded to a two-member consortium comprising Italian energy technology leader Ansaldo Energia and Turkish industrial group Çalık Holding, who will jointly handle construction and long-term maintenance of the gas turbines.

The signing ceremony was attended by government officials and representatives from the embassies of Italy and Turkey. In his remarks, Csaba Lantos, Hungary’s Minister of Energy, underscored the importance of the project:

“The construction of this new power plant is historic—Hungary hasn’t built a new baseload power facility in over 15 years. This project not only boosts energy independence and security but also plays a vital role in balancing renewable energy on our grid and reaching our climate goals.”

When operational, the twin-block 1,000 MW power plant is expected to generate approximately 7,500 GWh of electricity annually for the Hungarian grid.

Ahmet Çalık, President of Çalık Enerji Swiss, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable development and strong partnerships in Hungary and Europe:

“We are proud to support Hungary’s energy future. With a highly experienced team and cutting-edge technologies, we aim to deliver reliable, long-term solutions and be an active partner in the country’s strategic growth.”

MVM Group CEO Károly Mátrai highlighted the regional and national benefits:

“The Tisza CCGT project marks a new chapter in Eastern Hungary’s energy story. The plant will replace a decommissioned facility, delivering flexible, modern capacity that meets rising demand and supports renewable integration. Leveraging existing grid infrastructure and resources, this investment strengthens both energy stability and the local economy.”

Preliminary community surveys show broad public support for the development.

Fabrizio Fabbri, CEO of Ansaldo Energia, emphasized the strategic value of the project and the company’s role in Hungary’s energy transition:

“This is a defining project for Hungary’s energy future. We are honored to deliver our most advanced gas turbine technology—hydrogen-ready and designed for maximum efficiency and flexibility. It’s a strong step forward for the nation’s energy security.”
