E-Fuels company HIF Global has announced its inaugural project in Brazil following the signing of a land reservation contract with the Port of Açu, one of the country’s key ports. This facility aims to produce up to 800,000 tons of e-methanol per year.
The Port of Açu will provide essential support across various aspects of HIF’s project development.
HIF Global is actively exploring e-Fuels development sites globally, seeking locations that offer a favorable mix of conditions, such as access to affordable renewable energy, abundant CO2 sources, stable legal frameworks, favorable market environments, and well-developed port facilities.
Situated in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Port of Açu has received a preliminary environmental license to develop a hub for hydrogen and its derivatives. The port complex is emerging as a vital logistics and industrial center, strategically positioning itself within the renewable energy sector.
The HIF project is expected to attract significant investment and stimulate the local economy.
e-Fuels are produced using electrolyzers powered by renewable energy to generate hydrogen, which is then combined with recycled carbon dioxide to create carbon-neutral e-Fuels like e-Methanol. This type of fuel can be utilized in shipping or converted into other e-Fuels, including e-Gasoline for vehicles, e-SAF for aviation, and e-Diesel for trucks.
Chemically equivalent to traditional fuels, e-Fuels can seamlessly integrate into existing engines without the need for modifications.
Located in northern Rio de Janeiro, the Port of Açu is the largest private deep-water port complex in Latin America. Operational since 2014, it is managed by Porto do Açu Operações, a collaboration between Prumo Logística, controlled by EIG, and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International.
