HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), a key part of HD Hyundai, has secured a $1.76 billion contract to build eight eco-friendly containerships for a major Asian client. These advanced vessels are expected to join the fleet of Singapore-based Ocean Network Express (ONE).
The ships will be constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) at their Ulsan shipyard and are scheduled for delivery in 2028. This deal highlights HD KSOE’s growing presence in environmentally friendly shipbuilding.
Earlier in 2025, Ocean Network Express, a joint venture between Japan’s leading shipping firms NYK, MOL, and K Line, commissioned HD HHI to build a fleet of LNG-powered 16,000 TEU containerships. The $220 million per vessel order reflects the shipping industry’s shift toward greener fuels.
Over the past year, HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding divisions have received multiple significant orders across various vessel types, including gas carriers, tankers, and bunkering ships. Notably, in July 2024, HD KSOE landed a $2.67 billion deal to construct twelve eco-friendly containerships, with delivery planned by mid-2028.
Further strengthening its maritime footprint, HD KSOE is also building twelve additional vessels for CMA CGM, expected to be delivered by late 2028. Alongside container ships, HD HHI will supply several liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and NYK Line by the end of 2028.
This surge in eco-friendly ship orders underscores HD KSOE’s commitment to sustainable shipping solutions and innovation in the global maritime industry.
