Genesis Fertilizers Teams Up with thyssenkrupp for Ammonia Plant

Genesis Fertilizers has reached a major milestone with the signing of a Process Design Package (PDP) and License Agreement with thyssenkrupp Uhde, a global leader in ammonia production technology.

The agreement represents a pivotal step in Genesis Fertilizers’ plan to develop Western Canada’s first low-carbon nitrogen fertilizer plant—focused on sustainability, innovation, and delivering farmer-first solutions.

Ammonia, a critical ingredient in nitrogen fertilizers, plays a central role in sustainable agriculture. thyssenkrupp Uhde’s advanced uhde® ammonia technology offers industry-leading energy efficiency, reduced emissions, and dependable production—all supported by decades of proven engineering expertise.

This technology will be instrumental in helping Genesis Fertilizers ensure a secure and localized supply of fertilizer for Western Canadian growers.

“Our collaboration with thyssenkrupp Uhde exemplifies the caliber of innovation and expertise that Genesis Fertilizers is bringing to this transformative project,” said Jason Mann, CEO of Genesis Fertilizers. “Their advanced technology not only improves operational efficiency but also strengthens our commitment to sustainability—ensuring reliable access to high-quality fertilizer for Canadian farmers.”

thyssenkrupp Uhde’s proprietary process combines nitrogen extracted from the air with hydrogen derived from natural gas, using a system designed to lower energy use, reduce emissions, and optimize cost-efficiency—key benefits for Canada’s agricultural sector.

For farmers across Western Canada, this partnership offers clear advantages:

  • Supply Security: A local, consistent source of nitrogen fertilizer, reducing reliance on volatile global markets.

  • Price Stability: Improved production efficiency supports long-term planning for growers.

  • Sustainability: Lower emissions align with the environmental goals of the farming industry.

By adopting thyssenkrupp Uhde’s technology, Genesis Fertilizers is advancing its mission to build a resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible fertilizer supply chain.

The project remains on track, with commercial operations targeted for 2029. Genesis Fertilizers will continue to keep growers informed as progress continues.
