State-owned developer Gabon Power Company (GPC) has announced that civil engineering works for the 125MW Owendo gas-to-power (GTP) plant will commence in June. The project, co-developed with Finland’s Wärtsilä, is a key initiative aimed at enhancing Gabon’s energy security and diversifying its power generation mix.
The Owendo GTP plant is expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing Gabon’s electricity supply by utilizing domestically sourced natural gas to generate reliable and cost-effective power. This aligns with the government’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported fuels and transition towards a more sustainable energy infrastructure.
The power plant will feature high-efficiency gas engines supplied by Wärtsilä, known for their flexibility and ability to integrate with renewable energy sources in the future. Once operational, the facility will significantly strengthen Gabon’s electricity grid, supporting industrial and economic growth, particularly in the capital, Libreville, and surrounding regions.
GPC has emphasized that the project will also contribute to job creation, local capacity building, and technology transfer, reinforcing Gabon’s position as a regional energy leader. The plant’s construction and future operation are expected to provide numerous employment opportunities while fostering skills development in the country’s power sector.
With construction set to commence in June, the Owendo gas-to-power project marks a significant step forward in Gabon’s efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure and ensure a more stable, cleaner, and sustainable power supply for its citizens and industries.
